Raising International Business Awareness (RIBA) programme/module organized by Dokuz Eylül University (Faculty of Business) Izmir, Turkey in the odd number semesters (beginning third week of September and ending last week of January) has the following rationale and characteristics.

o The module consists of 5 courses and papers.
o In total, 30 ECTS are offered.
o The module is open to domestic and foreign students
o The module is open to 3rd and 4th year students of Business and Management. Students should have acquired 120 ECTS before participating in RIBA. A general background in Introduction to Management, Business and Marketing will be useful.
o The model is offered in the first semester of each academic year. For Dokuz Eylül University it usually starts at the end of September and ends in the fourth week of January).
o Because instruction is in English, students must have good working language skill. English level must be B-1 or at least B-2 (Common European Framework for Reference for Languages). Students must also be competent in working with WORD, ACCESS, EXCEL, POWERPOINT and INTERNET applications.

o In our view, Business and Management education requires half arts and half science. Thus, our programme is designed to provide both soul (arts+soft) and body (science+hard) aspects of management. Courses like Turkish Management Culture and Business Ethics compose the soft (soul) aspects, however Marketing, Business Cases and EU relations constitute the hard (body) aspects.  
o Furthermore, we have not only emphasized on “Soul and Body”, but also included the international context just to meet the demands of RIBA programme. Therefore, basic difference of this curriculum from any faculty of business is that it is a lot more internationally (especially European) oriented and designed to meet the needs of incoming students needs, i.e. a comparative understanding of theories and indigenous applications of several nations. Thus, although some of the names of the courses may resemble each other, due to the very nature of the subjects, the contents are substantially different.
o The aim is to improve the sensitivity and understanding of both international and Turkish students concerning the different business philosophies and practices which in turn may, hopefully, contribute to their future relations.

If you would like to participate in RIBA, you should have already acquired some start competences (i.e. the knowledge, skills, attitudes you need BEFORE you enter the RIBA module) and you will acquire final competences (i.e. knowledge, skills, attitudes AFTER having finished the RIBA module). Below you can find these competences in detail:

Start competences

o Students should at least have acquired 120 ECTS before participating in RIBA. This module is open to 3rd and 4th year business administration and management students. The students taking part in RIBA courses are presumed to have a theoretical commercial/business management background with at least some experience in project/team work
o Students participating should have the English level B1- at least B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
o Students should be able to work with Microsoft Office (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint) and the internet (search engines and email)
o Basic knowledge of marketing
o Basic knowledge of management
o Students should be able to do research, make analyses and work on papers in teams.
o Students should be able to express their opinions while at the same time being able to listen to others
o Students should be able to contribute to discussions in English
o Students are should be able to fluently read and write English
o Students should be able to debate and argue business related issues
o Students should have modest and realistic expectations about living in other countries.
o Sensitive to cross-cultural issues
o Enthusiast, willing to learn
o Interest in recent political and European developments
o Open minded
o Flexible
o Critical, yet not arrogant
o Willing to function in a multicultural environment
o Aware of the importance of an international experience

Final competences
o Students will have an insight into the main institutions of the EU.
o Students will have an insight into the political processes of lobbying and networking.
o Students will be familiarized with issues of European trans-national commercial practice.
o Students will be aware of the EU competition rules.
o Students will be able to respect and integrate existing regulation in European business relationships.
o Students will understand the recent economic and political topics involving the EU.
o Students will understand the main reasons and developments concerning the enlargement of the EU.
o Students will understand how the EU works.
o Students will be aware of the difficulties that may arise in the trading business of two or more co-operating European countries.
o Students will understand the issues underpinning today’s best practices in e-commerce, customer relationships, green management, marketing, social responsibility, ethical issues, cultural diversity, management and leadership.
o The students will be aware of innovative strategies in the field as well as future trends.
o The students’ level of English will have improved by learning by doing (by actively using English in classes, group discussions, papers, assignments, …)
o The students will be prepared to live and work in a European and multicultural environment, free from the prejudices sometimes preventing a fruitful international co-operation.
