Course prerequisites (start competences)
o Verbal competences are required for the group discussions and presentations
o Writing skills are required for writing reports
o students are able to do research, make analyses and work on papers, assignments independently
o students are able to work in team
o interest in recent political and European developments

Course description & goals (final competences)
This course aims at comparing the EU as a world player with other world players such as ASEAN, NAFTA and the WTO. The course aims at showing the importance of the European Union on world level, not only today but also in the past and in the future. Therefore, the origins of the EU and the future (e.g. future member states and evolutions) will be discussed.

Theoretical Contents
o History of the EU: from the early start until this very day
o The future of the EU: “The EU is too large and has become unorganised”. Fact or fiction?
o The EU as a world player:
   o The EU’s global role
   o How the EU conducts its external relations
   o Common foreign and security policy
   o World-wide trade benefits
   o Eradicating poverty through sustainable development
   o Humanitarian aid
   o The EU’s partners around the world
o The EU versus NAFTA
o The EU versus ASEAN
o The EU versus the WTO (World Trade Organisation)
o Case-studies (bloopers and success stories):
o The China Textile Deal
o The European Commission versus Microsoft

Goals (final competences)
This course wants students to have a complete insight into the role of the EU as a world player: its history, current situation, future, strengths, threats, weaknesses and opportunities. Students must be able to grasp the importance of the EU next to other players such as NAFTA, ASEAN and WTO and must be able to indicate the major differences and dissimilarities.

Teaching method
2 Hours of classes per week.
• Strong focus on:
– Class/group discussions
– Negotiations
– Case studies and presentations
• Students should actively participate

Evaluation
Examination and assessment method
o Presentation: 20 % of total marks
o Oral exam: 40 % of total marks
o Written exam: 40 % of total marks (reading comprehension: newspaper article on EU)

Retake
o Individual paper of 10-15 pages
