Cost of living PDF Print E-mail

Cost of living in Finland is on average comparable to the rest of Europe. A single student is advised to have approximately € 440-590 per month to cover the cost of accommodation, food and basic transport.
The monthly expenses depend much on where you live and how much you spend on your leisure time activities, food, social life, travelling within Finland or to neighbouring countries, books and other materials etc. You are advised to have a further € 100 monthly for the leisure time activities. There are always unanticipated expenses for any international traveller, perhaps especially for the student.

Shopping
It is to your advantage to check the newspapers for daily specials. The words ‘ale, tarjous, erikoishinta’ indicate sale or special offer. If there are words which you don’t understand, ask Finnish fellow students what they mean.
Most stores are open from Monday through Friday from 9.00 am till 9.00 pm, Saturdays from 9.00 am till 6.00 pm. Shops are closed on Sundays, except before big holidays like Christmas and during summer.
